The sub-500cc motorcycles, the R3 and MT03, Yamaha is preparing to re-enter the premium quarter-litre motorcycle sector in India. Only single-cylinder motorcycles from the brand are now available for purchase in the nation. The company recently showed off the Yamaha R3 and MT03 bikes to its dealers in an effort to enhance its line-up. Chairman Eishin Chihana has confirmed the launch of the smaller R3 and MT03 while considering the launch of the larger MT07 and R7. By the end of this year, the launch will take place. Yamaha will compete with models like the KTM RC 390, KAWASAKI NINJA 300, and TVS APACHE RR 310 motorcycles. Previously, it was one of the more expensive bikes in the segment.

Here, the styling follows a well-known pattern. Like the R15, the R3 has clip-on handlebars that provide an aggressive rider’s triangle. In contrast, the MT03 is a street naked with an upright riding position. Both motorcycles have nearly identical tail sections, however, the MT03 lacks a front fairing.

Both motorcycles share a similar mechanical design. As per the government’s norms, they are driven by a BS6 Phase 2, 321 cc, twin-cylinder engine with a maximum torque of 29.6 Nm at 9,000 RPM and a maximum power output of 42 PS at 10,750 RPM. The 6-speed gearbox, which has a slipper clutch. The front of the vehicle has 37mm USD forks with 130 mm of travel, and the back is supported by a monoshock with 125 mm of travel. R3 and MT03 will use 298 mm front and 220 mm rear rotors for braking purposes. The front and rear tyres have dimensions of 110/70-R17 and 140/70-R17, respectively, with dual-channel ABS.
Finally, Yamaha Motors India presented the future R3 to the nation’s journalists. R3 was featured during an event in Chennai, India. In August 2023, an official launch announcement is expected.
